The challenge

The transition to more renewable energy will lead to major changes in the European energy system in the years to come. However, one of the main challenges is that new energy sources, such as wind and solar power, are highly weather dependent, which will make balancing the power system difficult. Clean Norwegian hydropower could potentially play an important role in stabilising the power supply, but it will require extensive planning to make it work efficiently.

The goal

The project aims to establish a factual basis and improve existing modelling tools for the long-term development of the power system. This entails defining the most important market drivers and technological and political drivers, such as increased use of flexibility. One aspect of the project will be to examine how best to harmonise the Norwegian and European power markets.

The project

The NorENS project will investigate probable outcomes associated with the transformation of the European power system, using advanced modelling tools that simulate future developments and the link between the Norwegian and European energy systems.
