We depend on secure supply of power

We are completely dependent on electricity, and we expect electricity the second we plug something in a socket. In a modern city life even short power outages will have consequences for businesses, public enterprises and private households.

The future is electric

The total usage of electricity have increased by more than 30 percent since 1990, but there is no clear answer to how the power consumption will evolve in the future. The population growth will increase the usage, but various energy-saving measures, district heating and smartgrid-solutions may dampen this growth. Despite this, we need to upgrade the grid. We are becoming increasingly dependent on electricity. Just think of how many electrical appliances that did not exist 40 years ago. There is no doubt the future is electric.

The grid must be able to withstand tomorrow's consumption

The existing grid covers our current power needs, but an increase in consumption over the last 20 years have used up all the capacity, and there is no room for further significant increase. That is why the grid must be renewed.

Why must we plan for the coldest day of the year?

It is the hour of the year when consumption is at its absolute highest that determines how the grid must be dimentioned. The freezing cold mornings when the electric radiator is on full, the coffee maker is on, all lights are lit and yet another member of the family is taking a shower is what the main grid must be dimentioned for

How much electricity will we use in year 2050?

There is considerable uncertaincies when it comes to future electricity consumption in Oslo and Akershus. Population growth and new ways of using electricity will increase the consumtion, even though energy efficiency measures could contribute to slow down the increase. We know that the main grid must get upgraded, but the consumption trends will affect how quickly this must happen.
