The challenge

Many large and critical structures, such as pylons and wind turbines, are held together by thousands of bolts. For maintenance purposes, these bolts must be checked regularly, which is often both laborious and dangerous.

The goal

To develop a new sensor that is ready for the market in three years. The new bolt sensor will contribute to safer structures, reduced costs and safer maintenance of Statnett’s installations.

The project

The research partners are developing a new type of sensor technology with sensors and “readers”. The solution detects bolt tension, which provides information about the condition of the bolt connection and whether tightening is needed.
