As the integration of renewables in the Nordic power system continues, the task of ensuring maintained balance and security of supply becomes even more challenging. At the same time, the development towards a more harmonized European electricity market paves the way for efficient use and exchange of balancing resources.

– The changes in the power system are substantial, and are arriving fast. To meet the challenges of tomorrow, we need to develop tools and models together, fit for the Nordics in a European context today, says Erik Ek, Senior Vice President Operations at Svenska kraftnät and Øivind Rue, Executive Vice President at Statnett in a joint statement.

The new balancing concept, developed by Statnett and Svenska kraftnät, is based on the well proven concept of ACE (Area Control Error) control, and is called Modernized ACE (MACE) control. Compared to ACE control, MACE control utilizes modern IT solutions and optimization algorithms, automatic reserves and available transmission capacities in order to exchange reserves between bidding zones, all in order to secure maximal efficiency and operational security.

– In our view, this is the way of the future to balance a power system. With MACE control, we use new IT solutions to optimize the utilization of balancing resources in large volumes, says Erik Ek and Øivind Rue.

– Initiating this improvement makes sense from many aspects. The current Nordic System Operations Agreement is being revised and a common IT platform for balancing and reserves, Fifty, is commonly developed by Svenska kraftnät and Statnett at the moment. Developing a new balancing concept together at this point is well-advised, says Erik Ek and Øivind Rue.

The Nordic power system comprises a joint synchronous system in Norway, Sweden, Finland and parts of Denmark. Svenska kraftnät and Statnett share the responsibility for balancing the system in the existing System Operations Agreement, SOA. Danish and Finish TSO’s Energinet and Fingrid are now invited to join the cooperation on a modern balancing concept, fit for the future challenges of tomorrow’s power system.
