The challenge

With the models available today, it is difficult to assess the thermal conditions created during the operation of transformers that are more than 15 years old. Consequently, new models that can provide useful information and a better basis for assessing residual service life are needed to enable the right decisions to be made with regard to reinvestment or transformer maintenance.

The goal

The project aims to help to provide a better understanding of thermal conditions in existing transformers, and facilitate a better and safer assessment of residual service life. Having more accurate data and equally good models for old transformers as for new ones, will simplify and improve the process of making the necessary reinvestments at the right time.

The project

SINTEF is leading the project, but the work is being carried out jointly with ABB, which has the necessary data basis for old transformers. All simulations will be verified with measurements on physical units. From an R&D perspective, the challenge lies in using new knowledge to analyse the condition of old transformers, including input from the SAMBA project.
