Six million light bulbs switched off in Norway during Earth Hour
(3/30/2010)
Many towns, companies, organisations and individuals demonstrated their support for good climate solutions by switching off the light during Earth Hour on Saturday evening. Calculations from Statnett’s National Control Centre shows a reduction in power usage in the order of 250 million watt.
An estimate shows that power consumption in Norway was reduced by about 250 MW because so many switched off their lights. The reduction corresponds to a little over six million 40-watt light bulbs, or just under one tenth of consumption in the Oslo region. The same figure for last year was five million 40-watt light bulbs.
“The fact that so many people with access to a light switch chose to participate, creates a global and visual expression of people’s will to show that they care about the world’s energy consumption and our environment,” says Statnett CEO Auke Lont, and continues: “ We have been delighted to support the WWF Earth Hour campaign. It is important for Statnett to encourage good climate solutions. In the coming years we will be building new power cables that facilitate the production and use of renewable energy in Norway and our neighbouring countries,” Lont concludes.
“We are extremely proud of having conducted this campaign, and it seems people’s climate commitment is still there,” says Rasmus Hansson, secretary general of WWF.
