Reduced capacity for the Skagerak cables
(6/10/2010)
A fault in a voltage divider at Statnett's facility in Kristiansand resulted in a breakdown in Skagerak 3 (500 MW) on Wednesday at 1352 hours.
The capacity for the entire Skagerak connection will be temporarily reduced by 500 MW to 250 MW from midnight on 10 June. This is due to the electrode current in the remaining cables (Skagerak 1 and 2) becoming too high when Skagerak 3 is down.
Transmission of up to 500 MW is permitted for Skagerak 1 and 2 until the next setting of prices (up to 40 hours) in the event of breakdowns in Skagerak 3. Thereafter, the transmissions must be reduced to 250 MW – which will be the case from midnight.
The spare part necessary to repair Skagerak 3 is being transported from Denmark to Kristiansand immediately, and is expected to be in place this afternoon. The spare part will be installed as quickly as possible and the connection will then have to be tested before the cable comes back online.
