Statnett co-ordinates supply and demand, and owns large sections of the main Norwegian power grid.

New spot areas and record-low temperatures

Statnett's National Control Centre draws up three interim reports a year to provide information on technical matters and financial key figures relating to the operation of the system.

Important highlights from the system operation interim report for this period:

  • Two new spot areas have been set up, NO2 (South-West Norway) as of 11 January, and NO5 (Western Norway) as of 15 March.
  • Enduring cold spells and record-high demands, especially in the eastern and western parts of Norway. Record-high consumption in Norway on 6 January. Some hours of output shortages resulting in higher prices.
  • Following shutdowns for repairs and maintenance in the summer/autumn, much of the nuclear power capacity in Sweden were not reconnected again until late into the winter. This resulted in additional pressure on the Norwegian production capacity.
  • Tight supply situation in Mid Norway and Western Norway.
  • Reduced security of supply to Bergen for around one month due to high levels of consumption and scarcity of water in the reservoirs.
  • Upgrade of the transnational interconnectors Nea-Järpströmmen completed on the Swedish side of the border, full capacity from 29 March.
  • NorNed out of operation between 29 January – 27 April.
