A fourth interconnector between Norway and Denmark

Statnett and Energinet.dk have decided to invest in a new HVDC power connection, Skagerrak 4, between Norway and Denmark. The cable will improve security of supply, facilitate more renewable energy production and increase values in Norway and Denmark. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014.

The Skagerrak 4 interconnector will be beneficial for the Norwegian society because of the combination of Norwegian hydro power and Danish wind and thermal power. For Denmark, a new cable to Norway is important to meet ambitious plans for development of wind power. These plans are only possible with strong power connections to neighbouring countries.

The Skagerrak 4 cable will be the fourth cable between Norway and Denmark and, in addition to the cable itself, consist of two converter stations, one in Kristiansand and one in Tjele, Denmark. Existing facilities will be expanded.

The connection will be in total 240 km, of which 140 km will be placed at the seabed. Total estimated investment for the project is NOK 3 billion, devided between the two owners. Skagerrak 4 will have a capacity of 700 MW.
