The NorNed cable between Norway and the Netherlands is quoted in the Guinness Book of Records. At the length of 577.5 km it is registered as the longest subsea power cable in the world, about two times the length of the second longest cable of the same kind.
The 580 km long HVDC cable between Feda in Norway and Eemshaven in the Netherlands was completed in the Spring 2008. It was officially opened the Autumn the same year by the Norwegian Minister of Oil and Energy Terje Riis Johansen and the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Marian van der Hoeven.
The connection consists of two fully insulated conductors at the total length of 1 155 km. The two conductors are partly placed in one cable and party in two separate cables. As such, the total length of the cable installed at the sea bed between Norway and the Netherlands is 890 km. NorNed has a capacity of 700 MW, enough to supply power to 17.5 million 40W bulbs. The total weight is 45 000 tons, similar to 30 000 cars.
NorNed is at each end connected to the main grid system in Norway and the Netherlands by converter stations, both covering an area at the size of two full size football pitches.
