The new Statnett ship “Elektron” in operation
(5/20/2008)
Elektron was handed over to Statnett Transport last week from the Norwegian shipyard Flekkefjord Slipp og Maskinfabrikk (FSM), and the same evening enrolled at the Norwegian Ship’s register. MS Elektron is specially equipped to transport sizeable and heavy load, like transformers, but will also be available for other purposes.
Statnett ordered the new ship, which replaces the old “Elektron” from 1969, to maintain the state of preparedness that will be required in the future.
‘Elektron’ is specially equipped to transport and operate heavy weight items in shallow waters and areas without deep-water berth. It has a carrying capacity of 2000 tons, and the ramp is able to carry 500 tons.
‘We expect that commissions from outside Statnett will increase as the new ship is equipped to carry bigger and even heavier loads than the old ship’, Managing Director at Statnett Transport Bjørn Woll says.
For normal operations, the ship will be staffed with 9 persons, but there are cabins for a total of 35 people.
