Norwegian and Dutch Ministers to open the NorNed link
(8/29/2008)
The Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy Terje Riis-Johansen and the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Maria van der Hoeven will on 11th September perform the official opening of the NorNed link, the world’s longest subsea power cable, between Norway and the Netherlands.
The opening will be a co-production between Statnett and TenneT with two simultaneous festivities, in Feda and in Eemshaven. There will be big celebrations at both sides for specially invited guest.
Additionally in Norway, there will be a Folks festival at the centre of Feda, featuring several Dutch cultural traditions, characteristic operations at Statnett, the winners of Norwegian Pop Idol and Norway’s got talents, among others.
Opening of a pioneering cable connection
The NorNed connection took more than 10 years to plan and three years to complete at the cost of NOK 4,6 billion. At 580 km it is by far the longest submarine power cable. The cable has a capacity of 700 MW, and can cover half of Amsterdam’s or Oslo’s annual energy consumption. The cable will for the first time connect the Nordic and the Dutch power markets and contribute to future sustained security of supply in both Norway and the Netherlands.
