Due to the importance of electricity supply without interruptions or failures the transmission systems worldwide is usually well dimensioned and are being operated with margins that minimize the possibility of outages.
After the deregulation process started in the beginning of 1990s focus on efficiency has increased in the business worldwide. The challenge of increasing the boundary transfer limits in the existing transmission system and at the same time maintaining the power quality has therefore become more important.
In situations where one traditionally would have built new transmission lines it is today possible to operate the system more efficiently and postpone major investments.
