Statnett co-ordinates supply and demand, and owns large sections of the main Norwegian power grid.

What Statnett does

Statnett is first of all responsible for all high voltage electricity transmission and distribution in Norway. Such distribution is mainly from the country’s main hydro-electric power production plants countrywide. 

National main grid owner

Statnett is Norway’s national main grid owner and operator.

Main Grid Operator

Statnett is the Transmission System Operator (TSO) of the Norwegian electric power system. The Norwegian electricity grid is split into three levels: main grid, regional grid and distribution grid.

Main Grid regulator

Statnett's grid operation is responsible for maintaining constant balance between supply and demand in real time, and for continuously ensuring efficient use of the grid and satisfactory reliability of supply.

Core activities

Statnett’s core activities will:

  • Coordinate production and consumption of electricity
  • Offer access to the main grid on the same conditions for everyone
  • Develop the main grid
  • Ensure good maintenance
