Strategy and Public Affairs
The main task of the Strategy and Public Affairs is to plan developments in the Norwegian main grid relating to transmission of electric power, as well as international interconnectors. The unit is also responsible for Statnett’s strategy processes, communication, public affairs, research and development, as well as international consultancy and advisory services.
The unit assesses which instruments should be applied at any one time to ensure that the grid capacity corresponds to market needs. Such instruments include new lines, voltage upgrades of existing facilities, or new management and control systems. Statnett always aims to choose solutions that have an acceptable environmental impact, and which generate the greatest socio-economic benefits for our society.
Strategy and Public Affairs is responsible for recognising the need for new initiatives, identifying appropriate solutions and implementing the necessary projects as and when required.
The unit is headed by Executive Vice President Gunnar G. Løvås.
Projects Division
The main task of the Projects Division is to plan and implement Statnett’s development projects.
The Projects Division is:
- responsible for project development and licensing
- responsible for implementing Statnett’s grid development projects after a licence application has been submitted to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE)
- Statnett’s centre of expertise on engineering and power transmission services relating to overhead lines, cables and stations
- Statnett’s centre of expertise within project management and project control
- provider of engineering services for Statnett’s development, reconstruction and upgrading projects
- responsible for research and development programmes within the division’s area of responsibility
The division is headed by Executive Vice President Håkon Borgen.
Grid Operations Division
Statnett owns and operates almost 10 000 kilometres of high-voltage lines and 1000 kilometres of submarine cables – as well as approximately 130 transformer, switching and compensator stations including control systems.
Grid Operations (GO) maintains ownership of all Statnett’s existing facilities and of the company’s systemwide responsibility in the Norwegian power system, which entails maintaining a balance between production and consumption at the moment of operation, as well as coordinating main grid modification work and analysing the power systems.
The Grid Operations Division is responsible for operation, maintenance, reinvestment and facility preparedness.
The primary objective of Grid Operations is to ensure that the grid is available for power transmissions at all times, ensure continuous efficient utilisation of the grid and provide high quality for our customers.
The division is headed by Executive Vice President Øivind Rue.
Commercial Development
The primary objective of the division is to strengthen Statnett’s commercial development through:
- continuous development of Statnett’s central settlement role
- targeted customer focus
- ensuring progress for the company’s cable projects
- focus on monitoring and development of effective market design
- unify the company’s European ventures
Statnett is involved in a number of commercial transactions and processes. The Commercial Development division is responsible for strengthening the company commercially through follow-up, implementation and development of strategies relating to the company’s various commercial transactions.
The division handles benchmarking, pricing, invoicing and contractual relationships relating to the main grid as well as sections of the regional grid. The division is also responsible for balance accounting. The division invoices the operators through various settlement agreements, as well as all the system services which Statnett uses as Transmission System Operator.
The division is also responsible for developing market solutions for trade of various power market products in Norway as well as in the other Nordic countries and in Europe.
The division is headed by Executive Vice President Bente Hagem.
ICT Division
The primary task of this division is to operate and develop Statnett’s ICT systems and associated infrastructure. This includes: monitoring and controlling the electricity grid, ensuring balance between production and consumption in the electricity system, calculating grid power transmissions, as well as operations and maintenance systems for Statnett’s stations, lines and cables.
A separate robust national computer network provides safe communication between the stations, system control centre and other components in the power system. The division is also responsible for operation and administration of Statnett’s business system, office support platform and user support.
The division is headed by Executive Vice President Peer Olav Østli.
Corporate Staff
Statnett’s Corporate Staff is responsible for controlling, finance, accounting, procurement, business control and financial analysis, HR, payroll, pensions, legal issues, organisation development and property administration.
Corporate Staff is headed by Executive Vice President and CFO Knut Hundhammer.
